Getting metal out of crankcase?
Hi all,
Pulled the flathead motor out of my '86 Carryall 2 because of a horrendous knocking rattle. The piston was worn paper thin on one side, and eventually broke (cracked) creating some severe piston slap knocking. So... got it all apart, crank and rod/bearings seem okay. I am going to just order a $50 kit to replace the piston and rings. (I know I could probably rebuild the entire thing while it's apart, but I don't want to put any $$ into the old flathead, like buying a clutch puller). My question: How might I go about cleaning out the crankcase (I am sure there is some metal bopping around down there by now) WITHOUT pulling the clutch to get to the side of the engine block. Some sort of an engineered magnet on a stick? Whaddaya think?? Thanks all! |

Re: Getting metal out of crankcase?
I've done the magnet trick on tractor engines but not on a cart...Hopefully someone will come in behind me and help answer that question. Good Luck!

Re: Getting metal out of crankcase?
I don't think the "spray and blow" method will work, I am only working through the cylinder hole ... I don't want to pull the clutch. Otherwise, compressed air would work well.

Demarcor, do what you want but I can tell you that there is a lot more fragments in that engine and the crank bearings than you can see. Pull the clutch and do it right.

Re: Getting metal out of crankcase?
If there are fragments in the crankcase I always tear it apart and suck it out with a shopvac, then scrape off all the inevitable varnish that's caked on everwhere.

Re: Getting metal out of crankcase?
You guys are totally right. The only clutch puller I found was for '88 and up (my carryall is an '86), and it was $50. Just for a bolt.
Ehhh... I guess I am just being cheap, but with a 23 year old flat head, I need to draw the "spending" line somewhere. Thanks guys... appreciate all the help! Rob |

Re: Getting metal out of crankcase?
Call a cart shop and see what they would charge to pull the clutch for you.
And I agree with everyone else, If you don't have time or money to do it right this time, what will you do when you need to do it over? |
