Okay... Battery Problems
Hi, Everyone!
Okay... I'll make a very long story as short as possible. Wife and I went on vacation for about 5 days around Christmas/New Years. Left my 2001 Club Car DS and her 2010 EZGO RXV on their chargers. When we returned, the chargers were both fried. We suspect a close by lightning strike because really bad storms moved through the area while we were gone. Bought new Lester chargers. They work fine. However, batteries seem to not hold charges well on both carts. On the 2001, I suspected bad batteries because they are Duracells (they came with the cart) because previous load tests determined them to be pretty low (around 35%). However, when my wife took her 2010 out today with a full charge, she put about a mile on the cart and the meter showed that she only had a little over half a charge left (it was fully charged!) I know it's been pretty cold outside (around 35 during the day and around 22 at night) for the past few days, but I've never seen batteries die that quickly before, especially in the 2010. They are Crowns that are only about a little over a year old. They have been meticulously maintained. Any ideas what may be going on? Could it be from the possible lightning strike or is it just from the cold? |

Re: Okay... Battery Problems
I guess it is possible if they were charging when they got hit it could take out a battery. Test each battery voltage and then put a voltage meter on the pack and drive it. Report back what you find.

Re: Okay... Battery Problems
Okay... Read through some old posts about batteries on this site. Disconnected the main positive wire on each cart for about 15 minutes to try to reset the OBC. The 2010 did much better. I took it quite a distance (maybe 3 or 4 miles, which is well over twice as far as my wife went earlier) and the meter stayed pretty much on full charge the entire time. This is what we're accustomed to. I took the 2001 out for about two miles with HID headlights and the light bar on and it did pretty well also. Not once did the battery light indicator come on. I'm hoping that resetting the OBC did the trick for both carts. I'll have to keep an eye on them over the next few days. Gives me a chance to ride them suckers more during the Winter!
All I can say is it sure as heck is COLD outside! Running them things wide open in 30 degree weather about FROZE ME! :-) |

Re: Okay... Battery Problems
I might think about getting a nice "surge protector" to hook up those chargers to help maybe save that from happening again.

I'm not sure if everything is okay yet. It seems fine, but I'll have to keep an eye on things over the next week or two. |

Re: Okay... Battery Problems
Noticed the battery light was on an off again this morning on the Club Car DS. Going to have to some further investigation later today after work or sometime tomorrow.
