Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
I have a 1999 DS club car 48v (A99) . The repair guy said it has a bad OBC ($500 repair)(no thanks). The cart runs fine but wont charge. My question is.. I have seen an onboard charger the you wire directly to batteries for $320. Can I just buy this and not replace my OBC? The original charger for the cart checked out ok but I remember it was a lil quirky...maybe this was the OBC.
What would you do? replace OBC and use original charger? Any good places to get a OBC? I saw a few on ebay for $200-250 thanks, Michael. |

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
Does the main negative battery cable go through the hole in the obc?
If it turns out the obc is bad , the DPI charger that scottyb sells is the best replacement. He is a site sponsor. Look at top of this page to find his add. |

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
You have a couple options. Disconnect OBC and buy timer that you connect to your existing charger that will monitior charge and function as the OBC. I have seen them on ebay for $150. Second, disconnect OBC and get new charger which is even more expensive option. Or buy a new OBC, which you can find for less than $500 and if you PM me i can point you in the right direction for that choice. If you want the cheapest fix the timer option is it

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
I would strongly recommend against a Timer unless You know You have a Lester Ferroresonant charger, those timers do not work on a Power Supply box like the PowerDrive chargers that do not have a capacitor.

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
The timer works on the older Lester chargers by CC..if you have a 99 with original charger a timer will work

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
Mine is a A9950- Regen 2, I put a new OBC on for $219.00 , same OBC that fits our 03 DS IQ cart. Now I still have two carts that work Like they came from Factory. Even with a DPI or whatever these Batteries take a lot of Maintenance. Now the Lot to Less Maintenance can cost a lot of money. Funny how $600 ain't a lot for a controller/motor upgrade but is for a set of Batteries,...

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
Its been raining and I have been working, I plan to work on cart by then weekend. This is an extra cart I have and will sell after I fix this OBC issue. Not sure which fix im leaning towards... If I was keeping this one, I would lean towards a DPI charger.

Re: Bad OBC, Charging recommendations
Did you double check to make sure the main negative cable runs through the OBC? You may not have to do anything if that's all it is...
