Now this is strictly from my experience with 2 stroke motorcycle engines which have gravity flow fuel so that does not come in effect. A mag or ignition side crank seal leak will suck air in and lean the engine enough to raise idle, I have even seen a high rev condition (runaway) on an old 350 twin. If the gear box side seal is bad enough it can suck gear oil in the engine.
