Default Belts and clutches - Yamaha G2

I've been doing some reading, and I keep seeing something about how your "belt is sitting low, high, top, etc."

I just bought a G2, and I'm trying to tune it up.

Is there a sticky or a reference I can read about getting the best performance out of my belt/clutch? Searches for these terms are too broad.

I know I need to get a perf. Spring for the rear... and check the pads on the front. What else?

Thanks
Shawn

Your belt should be 1-3/16" wide (new) If it is around 1-1/16" replace it, you will notice a difference. Also check the plastic ramp shoes on the driven (rear) clutch. If you can post up some pics that may help.

Take the drive belt off and measure it like TheNewGuy suggested. Also look for fraying and gouges on the belt. Now with the belt off, take the primary clutch cap off. Inspect the 3 weights for abnormal movement (they should be tight when trying to wiggle them), if good, push the clutch in toward the engine. With the zerk fitting at 12:00, shoot 1 shot of grease in and then rotate the clutch till the zerk is at 6:00, wipe out any grease that has exited the seal weep hole. You only want grease on the sliding sheave bushing's. not on the weights and pins. The bad thing about the secondary clutch sliding sheave's on G2's is Yamaha didn't start adding a zerk fitting till 1990 G9's and up. That mean's you'd have to disassemble it to grease it and people just never did. If service is required on your's, I would highly recommend upgrading to the new sliding sheave with a zerk fitting. Be very carefull on adding a "torque spring", so many are so stiff, you will be robbed speed and clutch sheave damage will happen. Some prefer the Yamaha "Umax" style spring, it's alittle longer and stiffen's up the preload. Clutch's should be greased at least once a year depending on use. Good luck

Here are some photos of my clutches and belt. The belt is definitely worn and needs replacing. It's a little over an inch...but it has gouges and Nicks in it. I plan to order one, but want to make sure I don't need to order anything else with it.

That belt is toast. You can try the HD kevlar belt from CPP I ran that and was really impressed. Its a little wider and sits higher on the secondary, gives a better low gear to take off or tow with. It can make the belt drag a little when starting on some carts. It will help it shift better if you have worn sheaves in either clutch. You could cheat and get a 1 1/4 sled belt same length as stock, but its a really nice double cogged belt and seems worth the extra cost. It does not wear much I can tell you that. But even a new stock belt will help you for sure.

That is a new spring perch with the new style pads on the ramps, its been replaced and maybe the sheave too.

I like the umax spring a lot. Not running mine right now because I have a different clutch on it that does not like it, but with the G9 clutch it was great.

Another thing to check is the tension cable its under the starter pulley. It keeps the engine from moving when you floor it. If the engine moves on the rubber mounts too far the CVT will not shift right and make it bog. That cable breaks. Some make a new one with an eye bolt or weld washers to a bolt head. I had to for my clone it broke the cable but stock the cable was fine. You can adjust that for better power, but too far and it will lose top speed. I ended up tightening it until my hand gps showed less top speed then backed it off a little, it was perfect. Note I had no governor or limiter on my G9.

I used to lube the old secondaries by spraying lithium grease inside the spring on that shaft, it worked and would not fly off.

Thanks for the info. I did notice.my engine rocks a lot when I rev it...looked excessive to me. I'll look into that cable under the starter pulley.

I'll also look into that umax spring, and a new belt (obviously). I k ew I needed the belt...just want to make one order, and I'm waiting until I get a good list of everything else I need.

Thanks again!

check for "sagged-out" motor mounts, very common. look at the "clam-shell" design of the rear mounts. if they are touching, or look like they have ever been, they are gone. torn rubber is a sure sign as well. red & green parts should have a uniform gap above & below, should be "inline" with each other, and no signs of ever touching each other. this one is good.

While you are at it get rid of the cir-clip of your secondary shaft and put in the spacer.
