G1 clutch
I am losing speed on hills so I was reading on putting a 3/8 shim in the clutch but I have got lost on which clutch to put the shim in on my 1982 g1 , is it the clutch on the motor or transmission? I am assuming it is this secondary on the tranny it makes the most sense to me.

Re: G1 clutch
Primary clutch is on the motor. Secondary is on the trans. Shimming the secondary will give you more lower end torque but will reduce your top speed. Did you check for a worn out belt or dished sheave? Check the compression? Look for any oil spots where it could potentially be leaking around the crank seals? Shims will only help you climb hills better if you happen to have a worn out spring or just put a lift kit and 22 inch tires on it so I would be on the look out for something else going on if it's not pulling the hills like it used to.

Re: G1 clutch
Shim in the primary spring will raise engagement rpm but it should shift much the same once moving maybe little higher rpm. 3/8 is a BIG shim for that, I'd try 1/8. So it may be for the secondary. My g9 I took it out and put in a vice and carefully stretched it out about 1" longer. umax spring may work in secondary there should be posts on it, would need to cut off the tangs on the end as G1 has no preload.
Other posters are right, it needs to work right to start with before you mod anything. Stock G1 running well will burn the tires up a steep hill on dry dirt/grass in all stock form. They will stop and spin if too steep (completely stock including tires). You might stop it if you can find pavement that steep but not other surfaces on stock GC tires. |
