Default Different cable size

Do my battery cables need to be the same size wire? Right now I have burnt two post off my battery and can't figure out why. They are clean and tight on the post or they were

Only way you fail a post is if the connection gets very hot. Only reason it gets hot is too much resistance. (Bad connection) Fix that and it will no longer get hot and melt.
