Default Anyone upgrading the Kawasaki 4-cycle, OHV, 286 cc motors?

I am looking to upgrade my 9hp Kawasaki 4-cycle, OHV, 286 cc. I was wondering if anyone has been changing the cams, upgrading valve springs, push rods, re jetting the carb, changing timing key, or lightening fly wheel. Just looking to get some more out of the motor after the clutch upgrades i plan on doing. Let me know what kind of upgrades yall are using and what kind of gains you are getting.

think most people are doing big block swaps. removing the Fe290 & Fe350 and going BIG. Vanguard or Harbor Freight Vanguards. like 20-24 hp or so

It can be done (and has) but usually cost prohibitive. You'll spend a lot of coin on upgrading the FE290 to anything that makes big power and it's cheaper to drop the $1700 on a Vegas Carts 23hp swap (and they do a great job with custom brackets, mounts, etc. to make the swap painless).

The FE290 is a strong motor, and about as reliable as it comes. But building it to compete with a VC big block is going to sacrifice any and all reliability, and I still don't think it would come even close.

There’s tons you can do to an FE290. It won’t quite compete with a big block swap, (there’s no replacement for displacement) but it can be made into a pretty peppy little engine.

Check around Kawasaki off-road forums. Search for FE290 performance and stuff like that. There are cams, pistons, valves, timing keys, you name it, someone has probably done it. They’ve been in production for forever, so there’s definitly some upgrade parts out there if you look around.
