One advantage of multiple 48v batteries is the amps; for example, if single 48v battery is 100-amps, if you add second 48v/100-amp battery (in parallel), you will get 48v/200-amps.

The question was relating to series connected lower voltage batteries connected to give 48v (4 x 12v), not parallel connected 48v batteries connected to give higher current and range.
