94 EZGO Electric - how to increase speed?
I have a 1994 EZGO electric, 36 volt, Marathon...I got it used but I think everything on it is from the factory/original....1204 footprint controller....seems to run just fine except it only goes about 9mph....maybe can go 12 mph if going down hill.....seems like it should be faster??? I'm going to add a seat and two kids on the back.....mostly use it for driving around our campground and hauling a few pool toys!! I need to know what is the most economical way to increase the speed. I don't need it to go 50, but would be nice if it can go faster than I can walk! To maybe get it to go 15-20mph?? If I just add a larger amp controller will that do it? or do I also need to a get a new motor? And how big I do I need to go. The controller I have on it is only 275 amp (I think?) I'm up for suggestions as this is my first electric cart so this is all new to me. My husband is an auto mechanic so he can certainly swap parts with no problem....we're just not sure what parts we need!! I don't really want to put $1000 into it if $300 will get me the speed I need! Thanks for any helpful advice you can give!! Stacy

Re: 94 EZGO Electric - how to increase speed?
I've got a 94 but it's a Medalist, I put 500amp GE controller the Beast motor, two extra batts. and it will almost climb a tree, but you could most likely get by with a 400amp altraxs controller and add 2 more 6volt batts. Also you need to upgrade your batt cables to 4ga., that's all the cables from controller to motor and batts. The guys that are the shop owners and service techs will be in here soon and give advice.

Plus upgraded solenoid & F/R switch to handle the additional amperage.

So if I add two more 6 volt batteries where am I gonna put them? Doesn't look like any room for that under the seat area? Then I would need a different charger also? Can you put 4- 12 volt batteries under there instead? More info please. Thanks!

Re: 94 EZGO Electric - how to increase speed?
Whoa guys! Let's slow down for minute.
First off I have a 20 MPH 48volt Marathon. In a campground and with kids on the back, it is too fast. I'm all for speed under the right settings, but what she wants isn't a speed demon. What condition are your batteries in? old batteries=slow cart. I would upgrade all the cable to at least 4 Guage welding cable. See how that goes. Its cheap and should be done anyway. Then new batteries. Not cheap, but a necessary evil. Then if that's not enough, look for a 400 amp controller. Sounds to me you just need a crusier and this should get you started in the right direction. |

Re: 94 EZGO Electric - how to increase speed?
Check to make sure the brakes are not dragging. If you can push it by hand easily then all is well. Can you tell if there are three allen screws on the side of your controller? If so then you have one that is adjustable for amp output/ and plug braking. I only mention this because you indicated that it does not go past 11mph down hill. This was not a typical feature on 275 amp Curtis controllers but if it was replaced they are still in service today. Plug braking is a safety feature to keep the cart from reaching unsafe top speed down a steep hill. If you are not using the cart in a hilly area I would keep it stock as you will end up spending at least $600 in controller, solenoid, F/R switch, wire upgrades. Plus another $500+ in new batteries. The least expensive speed upgrade is probably the EMP 2 Speed motor and switch kit for about $400 and they will work around your current components including controller. Good luck.

Re: 94 EZGO Electric - how to increase speed?
For what it is worth the cart was only designed to run 13MPH on a good day. Oh yea almost forgot to mention that the Pot Box can be checked for output adjustment. Fairly simple task. If out of adjusment this can reduce full speed signal to the controller. Due a search and you can find many post on how to perform this test.

Re: 94 EZGO Electric - how to increase speed?
Well, I followed some advice.....so far I have checked the batteries which seem to be good, and upgraded all the wires to 4 gauge..that did increase the speed only slightly. Today my husband put on a 500 amp AllTrax controller which didn't seem to do much. Maybe a little bit quicker on take off which was not really a problem, but I don't see much change in top speed. We ordered it from Buggies Unlimited and so far there customer service leaves much to be desired so might try calling them tommorow or try AllTrax tech support also. We had some question on how to install as our old controller had 4 places to hook wires too and this new one only has 3. The tech guy from AllTrax said to take the two wires that were hooked to the other terminal on the old controller and just hook them together. So we did. Any other ideas? Next I may try a better motor but I was thinking this bigger controller would do more???
