Default G1 Battery/ Charging Issues

It has a new battery. And the regulator was tested and seems to be charging. I did add front and rear lights. It will go weeks and be fine than nothing. This has been an issue since the day i got it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When you say "nothing" I assume you mean you have a dead battery. What do you have to do to get it going again? What are your voltage readings when you test the charging system?

I put my charger on it for 5-10 minutes and it fires up. I was getting about 14.5 volts.

You should start by making sure the battery is fully charged. Not sure what you have for a battery charger, but a low (3-6 amp) probably should go overnite. Then, start the cart and check the terminal voltage of the battery while running in neutral or with the rear wheels jacked up. If voltage regulator is ok, you should read 14.5 - 15.5 volts during this test. If voltage regulator is not working, you will read only the terminal voltage of the battery (12.2 - 12.7 volts). A shorted regulator may give you a high voltage like 16-17 volts, but you have indicated that maybe the system is not charging, so this is unlikely. Let us know what you find for more information. If the battery is charged then clean the clamps/posts and the other end of the cables on the generator and solenoids. Note that grounds are wired on these, connection issues are very common.

Assuming that your battery, charging system and connections are all good, yes, something like the lights could be draining the battery. A chafed wiring harness is also a good possibility for a key-off drain. Disconnect the power wire to the lights when you don't need them and see if the problem goes away. Carefully inspect the wiring harness for damage that could cause an intermittent short. A common area for damage is where the harness curves around the muffler and battery.

Lights could be the problem, depends on how much current they draw and how long you drive with them on vs how long you drive with them off. Do you know how much current the lights draw ?? But, making sure the generator and voltage regulator are ok is your first step in sorting things out . RAY

The stock gen charges about 15A at higher rpm not at slow speed. It should run a set of 55w lights ok long as you run over 5mph or something. It could go dead if you don't run it during the day to charge the battery, because if you use all the gen power to run lights the battery does not charge. A lot of slow speed and stopping/starting can also eventually kill the battery. I also set the idle on the engine faster than the gen turns, it should not move the cart lube the clutch if the belt is dragging. Because if someone just runs the starter and does not step on the gas it drains the battery, but if it idles then it is running and will not. The G1 manual says to do this but later carts it does not. Lights are on or off, not likely they would discharge the battery while not in use unless you had a faulty relay or something.

It is a very good idea to use LED lights, even the headlights if you can find ones bright enough. LED takes a lot less power. A normal trailer/car tail light can take quite a bit and with 55w headlights it adds up. Best you can do is drop a 1,000CCA battery in there it will take longer to discharge, get a battery maintainer that is automatic and 1-2A charge, put that on it overnight once in a while, try to drive it during the day at constant speed someplace.

You can buy LED bulbs for regular socket tail lights.
