80-81 yamaha G1- wire heating up at the forward solenoid
hey guys, I have a wire heating up at the forward solenoid. the reverse solenoid kicks right in when i go to start her. But the front solenoid will take about 15 seconds or so to kick in cold. this is the wire that runs from the starter motor to the solenoid. I charged up the 12 volt battery to make sure it wasn't a weak power source. "this is where i am at"
It does not seem to be a loose connection, I'm leaning toward it being the solenoid on it's way out. Seeing how the reverse works fine. "whats your take" ? |

Sounds like solenoid is going out. If you swap them, what happens? Problem follow solenoid? If so, replace it.

Re: 80-81 yamaha G1- wire heating up at the forward solenoid
On the forward solenoid the small yellow wire is the one that activates the solenoid coil. Make sure you are getting full voltage on this wire when the key switch is in forward and the gas pedal depressed. (stop switch closed) Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil and compare it to the reverse solenoid coil. They should be the same. If i understand your post correctly you are saying that the wire from the solenoid to starter motor is heating up? Is the solenoid activating correctly but the starter taking the 15 seconds to start turning? This will surely produce heat in the wire if a large current is required to start the motor turning. You could be looking at a starter motor problem here.

Re: 80-81 yamaha G1- wire heating up at the forward solenoid
On the wire that heats up, if possible do a voltage drop test on it during cranking. Test at the posts, the cable terminals, and the terminal connection to the wire itself. The cable, or more likely, the terminal connections could be bad. Remove the connections and physically clean the posts and the terminal ends to clean metal and reinstall it. I've seen perfectly " looking " connections that were not able to conduct current!

Re: 80-81 yamaha G1- wire heating up at the forward solenoid
i think i found the problem which was the negative battery post. The ground wire was just shoved into the battery post. It is one of those posts that are designed to be crimped in, I drove a screw into the hole to secure the wire in the post and it has been working much better. Thanks for the troubleshoot ideas, much appreciated !
