'89 Engine Issue
Hey Guys.... Looking for some input. I was driving my '89 back from the golf course and it died. I figured out the steel tube between the tank and engine was corroded and had a small pin leak. Fine.... The field fix was to replace the entire length of fuel hose from the tank/filter to the fuel pump. I got the pump primed and engine running up on blocks. I took it for a test ride and only made it about 100 yards before it died and now won't start. I did a compression test and it's reading 130. I have a good clean plug with spark. I did notice when I pulled the plug after it died that it was wet with fuel. So, I have fuel, spark, air and compression.... What I'm I missing? Is it possible removing the steel fuel tube with new hose is allowing too much fuel to be pumped to the carb? (the float should meter fuel.....) I cart is up at the cabin, so I can't play/test any suggestions, just looking for some advice for the next trip up there.

Re: '89 Engine Issue
You have fuel, but where is it coming from? Take the fuel pump apart, and see if the lower diaphragm is ripped.

Take your finger and squeeze off the fuel line from tank to pump and see if it runs. If it does you need to rebuild the pump.
My guess from here. Many others on forum currently dealing with the same issue. |

Re: '89 Engine Issue
I would guess the float needle is stuck open. Maybe some of the corrosion from the steel line got in the carb. Replacing the steel with rubber is OK.

Re: '89 Engine Issue
Problem Solved: I brought the cart home and ordered a fuel pump bladder rebuild kit. Took the fuel pump off and inspected the bladders. Both were fine, but since I had the kit I rebuilt the pump.
Still wouldn't run.... Pulled the carb off and cleaned it... Removed all the jets and blew everything out with carb cleaner. Put it back together and the cart fired and ran perfectly on blocks. Dropped it from the jack and ran it up and down the block several times. I think I'm good to go....... I think the corroded steel fuel line that runs along the back seat frame was the cause. It was corroded and had a pin hole. When I removed it the gas was rusty. My guess is some rust was plugging one of the jets. In any event, now I have all new fuel lines, new fuel filters, and a rebuilt fuel pump. And I also know the compression is good at 130psi. Not much else to do now but drive it...!!!! |

Re: '89 Engine Issue
That is the plan...! I drove the neighborhood kids around the block today, they had a blast. And now I can finally give my friend use of his cart back....good thing we haven't been on the course at the same time this spring.
