Smile Loud Noise...but how loud is too loud?

I have a 2001 STS 480 bought 2 years ago. Now running nicely. HOWEVER, it seems pretty loud to me, but I do not know what a new one sounds like. When I ride it, it is pretty hard to hear the person next to you without raising your voice quite a bit. How loud are these when new?

Second, the muffler looks rusted, but otherwise ok. Is it possible the inside of the muffler is eaten up, increasing the noise? I am not seeing any leaks in the exhaust anywhere. Does the muffler need to be replaced every 13 years or so?
