Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
New to golf carting and new to the forum. Recently purchased a 2016 CC Precedent with 6 inch lift and 23 inch tires.
Currently running a high speed/low torque motor with stock controller and getting around 19-20 mph. Looking to increase torque (alot) and speed (somewhat). Not ready to do AC conversion at this time. I was looking at the D and D high speed/high torque motor with a XCT500 Alltrax controller. Anyone with that set up know what type of speed I can expect on a lifted cart with 23 inch tires? D and D website states between 16-23 mph, but I'd be interested to hear from someone who actually has that set up or something similar as to what type of speed I can expect. |

Re: Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
If you’ve already got an aftermarket motor installed, get a controller, HD solenoid, and upgrade the cables. That’ll wake it up.
High speed/low torque is relative. I had an admiral speed motor in the past with controller and everything else. It would spin 25” ITP mud lite tires in the dirt or on asphalt. In the grass they’d stick and almost lift the front wheels off the ground. That wasn’t a “torque motor” either but I didn’t see any need for more torque than that. It would run almost 30mph on flat pavement which was a little sketchy to say the least… |

Re: Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
Thanks. My fear is that I burned out my high speed motor. After running for 20-30 minutes or so the cart can't go up even a slight incline with 2 adults and 2 small children in the cart, gets super hot and shuts down. I let it rest for a minute or two and then it goes again but with almost no torque at all.

A high speed motor and big tires will let you down every time.
A stock motor with a speed magnet will run close to 25 with that sized tire. I think you have a battery issue, since you should be running much higher speed than that with a high speed motor. If the cart is shutting down your pack voltage is dropping to somewhere below 40v which means that pack is beyond dead. What batteries are in it? Brand and model number on them? As for the motor getting hot, low voltage can cause that, because the motor has work much harder trying to move the cart. Ideally with larger tires you need a Torque motor, which will run at much lower temperature, and will have the oomph to go up hills without being overloaded. |

hmmm...makes sense only thing is that I had the batteries tested a couple days ago - voltage, load and hydrometer and everything checked out. When driving the cart voltage never drops below 45-46, even when it is limp the voltage is still above 48 so who knows - my luck I probably need new batteries, controller and motor haha.

Quote:
D&D high speed motor, stock Curtis controller, 16 month old Trojans. When the motor was brand new I occasionally save 30 mph with the windshield down and riding alone, now after 4 years and another new set of Trojans I see 26 or 25 consistently and sometimes 28. Hope this helps, by the way when I had the stock motor I only saw 19 or 20. Went to trade it in 3 days old for a gas cart and the dealer said let’s first try the D&D motor before you do that. |

Re: Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
Yes that helps but it looks like you have the D&D high speed motor, which is probably faster than the motor I'm looking at - the D&D high speed/high torque motor.
How was the torque with the D&D high speed motor? I'd be happy with 25-26mph with the D&D high speed/high torque motor, but their website advertises that motor with a top speed of 23... |

Re: Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
Keep in mind—- speed is a factor of voltage and motor RPM, where all other things remain constant. Higher voltage creates higher motor RPM and makes more speed. Torque is a factor of current consumption.
You’re not going to reap the benefits of any torque motor without a controller upgrade. I’d still upgrade the controller with your current motor and see how it does. If you’re still not happy then get a torque motor. Otherwise running a 10hp high torque motor on the stock 250 amp controller is like installing a big block into your car but placing a wood block behind the gas pedal so you can only push the pedal halfway down. |

Re: Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
Understood. My plan is to get the D&D high speed/high torque motor with the Alltrax 500 amp controller. Just wondering if the advertised speed of 22-23 mph is about what I can expect with a lifted Precedent on 23 inch tires, or if I may be able to squeeze a couple more mph out of it.
I’m just concerned that the speed motor (even with a new controller) may not provide enough torque to carry 4 adults up hills, over bridges, etc… but I could be totally mistaken on that. |

Re: Best DC option for increased speed/torque on CC?
I'll chime in. You can see in my sig everything I have. My GC will easily pull a wheelie from a dead stop with about 300 pounds of human on the front seat. I have GPS'd at 4400 rpms at 23mph. I have not GPS'd at 6000 rpms yet, but it is noticeably faster.
However, keep in mind I have the 14 module leaf batteries giving more available amps as well as up to 58 volts. |
