what controls motor speed..

I was just reading on the motor that is in the cart is all. It was a GE I think.. and I know it is a series motor. Was just wondering on its rpm as it says rpm is 2200 I thin kit was but then said max safe rpm is 8000. This cart is all stock and I am only getting around 9mph clocking it with gps. Just seems to be slow than ones that I have rode while camping at the beach and renting theirs in the camp grounds... :(

Apparently there are two RPMs listed on the motor.
One is identified as the Max Safe RPM and the other is associated with the motor's HP, Torque or kWh rating.

The fact that the motor in your cart spins at approximately the RPM printed on the motor when it is moving at its top speed is coincidental.
However, a max speed of 9 MPH does seem a little slow for a stock 94 Marathon Controller cart.
I might be wrong, but I think they top out about 11 or 12 MPH when they are running right.

There are three major areas that need to be checked.

1. Batteries.
What is the pack voltage when cart is doing 9 MPH?

2. High Current Circuit.
Any cable, connection or contacts getting more than slightly warm needs to be repaired or replaced.
(The controller will get fairly warm and the motor will get hot)

3. Throttle.
If the pot-box isn't adjusted correctly, the controller may not be turning on fully.
(With the pedal on floor, the pot should measure at least 5,000 Ohms, but less than 7,000 Ohms)

Ok thanks I will give a look at that.As for the batteries I did a check on each one under load but not the whole pack.Each one while moving stayed right around 5.85 volts,but I will check the pot box and see if anything is getting hot around the connections under the seat.... Thanks

I've had 3 1994 marathons with blue motors and they all did 9 mph. That's all that motor's got.

Thanks for the correction. I knew the resistor type maxed out about 9, but thought the controller type was a bit quicker.

You would think so but that marathon motor is very low rpm I think.

ok checked voltage of all batteries while under load. every time I stopped voltage would come back up to around 46-47 but while ridding was around 44-45 pulling small hill I seen it drop down to around 31 or so.. Does that seem ok or is that voltage drop too much... Thanks

What voltage batteries (6V, 8V or 12V) you are using and how many of each are connected in series?

In other words, are you running a 36V, 42V or 48V battery pack or something else?

its a 36 volt system 3 on 1 side 3 on the other side under seat
now I have to go and recheck make sure it was that high or if I was reading wrong lol

Was holding around 37 the rest of the numbers from the other post I was just have a du moment.
They are suppose to be 36-37 stopped... ridding flat 34-35....pulling small hills did see it drop down to 30-31
