FE290 died while cruising and won't start
After working on the brakes today, I took the wife and baby for a slow cruise(slow creep speed) in our pasture. We've had a good amount of rain so there were a few shallow puddles and we rode thru some thick wet dirt (not wet enough to be considered mud) but only had to raise RPMs to half throttle at most. Total time of cruising was probably 10mins or less. Checked for spark with spark plug test kit and there's spark, was hard to tell if it was strong since it was starting to rain again. Checked for fuel and pump was supplying as I was cranking. I loaned my compression testing to a friend and will be getting it back tomorrow.
Basic rundown: -Cart set up to crank engine when key is turned to "on". S/G spins but engine doesn't crank. -Can here the difference in engine cranking when accelerator pressed and when it isn't, when pressed sounds like more air sucked through choke. -Tank has fuel, fuel filters have fuel and fuel pump supplying fuel to carb -Checked spark with tester, bulb lit up but hard to tell how strong -Engine has oil -Air filter installed correctly -No recent work on engine or electrical since last few times cart has been driven. If i'm missing any details just let me know. Thanks. |

Re: FE290 died while cruising and won't start
Forgot to mention cart is still stuck out in pasture as ground was to soggy and distance pretty far to push it back into shop. Tomorrow I will tow it back in shop to go over "engine kill circuit" along with compression and carb.

Sorry to hear that Joe!
I know you checked the fuel pump for fuel, but did you check the carb bowl for fuel? (I know... I know... it was raining!) Loosen the bowl drain screw to see if you have fuel in the bowl, (#12) if not, you have junk in the float needle/seat. |

Re: FE290 died while cruising and won't start
I thought about that around 2am this morning. I was so pissed off that I walked out to the pasture as soon as the sun begin to rise and pushed the cart all the way into the shop. Didn't get to check anything before mama started yelling that it was time to go.
I did try to hit the air box with csrb cleaner but again it was raining so I didn't want to get filter wet. |

Make sure the intake tube isnt cracked open. Mine was on my cart, i kinda think thats why it got sent to auction. No other problems found. They dont want to run if that tube is off or cracked open.

Another easy test to see if you have fuel flow through the carb...
remove the intake hose from the carb, and crank it over, it should spit fuel out of the opening of the carb. |

Re: FE290 died while cruising and won't start
Thanks fellas, I'll check when I get home. It's just weird that it was running fine and all of a sudden quit. But now that I think about it, before the ride I stopped cart to open gate to drive cart into field. Instead of shutting right off it ran for about 5 seconds after get was turned to off. Almost like it was still being supplied fuel but no spark...no backfire happened unless it was small and through carb. Hope all this makes since.

I don't recall what compression was when I got the cart, but as of now it's at 90psi

Re: FE290 died while cruising and won't start
YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! So after checking everything, I looked under the cart and there was a wire with a ring connector laying on the engine cradle, brown/tan. Taped it up and engine fired right up. Now I'm pissed at myself lol.
