Default wire gage for battery hookup

OK guys, a little insight here. I am installing a marine grade fuse box and ground terminal in my 36 volt PDS. Right now all that is being used is the factory headlights and tail lights tapped into the first two batteries(but some more add ins coming). The wires driving the lights look like 12 gage. Is that the best size to use for my new application? Right now I am going to switch to two different batteries (to save distance from batteries to mounting boxes) and eventually add a DC converter--ScottyBs). Also, I intended to use 16 gage to the various add on items...again, would this be the proper wire gage?

Side note: Scotty when do you ever find time to work on your carts(I know you do) and your business with all the time you have spent on answering all the questions on the site?

HA HA - In the summer I work on my carts in the evening and maybe a little on the weekends. It's easier in the winter when things are slower around the shop.

The DC > DC reducer should be fed with 10g wire. 12-14g is all that is needed for lights depending upon their draw. This light has 12g feed

Thanks ScottyB! 10 gage from battery pack to fuse box and 12-14 gage to all else. Those will be fun(not) running to their application points!
