Default Brake problem after sticking hunting cart

So, I have a 1993 Club Car DS 4" a-arm lift. 8 6 volt batteries, new controller, etc., and a plum quick torque motor. My boys stuck it in a sandy/muddy spot last weekend. It runs, but rear wheels sound like there some grinding going on (well maybe not grinding so much as maybe sand somewhere) and the rear brakes don't work well. I replaced the factory brakes with self-adjusting brakes last year and they aren't readjusting.

Any thoughts? Was considering trying to remove the wheels and drums (if i can get those off) and clean everything off. What's the safe thing to clean the parts with so I don't ruin my brakes? Any other suggestions? the cable and pedal seem to be working fine based on a visual inspection underneath.

Definitely pull the drums and get the mud and sand out of there. A garden hose should do the trick

Thanks, any chance that stuff got in the axle casing? Those boys got it stuck!

One of the problems I have had is contamination in the brake cables themselves..plus the cables can get stretched under extreme conditions...so verify the cables are moving freely and look at cable travel on both sides...set the e-brake and try to turn the wheels to see if they are both locked. Could just be moisture in the cables. Also look at lubrication on the backing plate to be sure the brake shoes can slide easily and not get stuck. I ended up replacing both left and right brake cable.😎

I did pull the drums and clean everything. I looked at the cables - very cursory though, so I will try your suggestions and report back. Thanks.

So I looked at it again last night. First I tightened up the brake cables to eliminate the huge amount of play in the pedal. Then I cleaned both sides again and checked to see if they locked with the e-brake/parking brake on. One side is 90-95 pct locked but can turn if I try real hard. The other side is about 50 pct locked. I took that side’s drum off again and checked for shoe movement. Only one of the shoes moved with brake down - the one closer to the rear of the cart. Any idea why only one shoe moving? As for the other side maybe I just need to clean it some more? Thanks.

Look and see if something is bent. The mount the cable runs through maybe?
