I just noticed you have a "dual coil" model Solenoid, those types have an internal contact that shorts one of the coils out of the circuit for maximum pull, once the main contacts close the other coil is inserted in series to provide reduced holding power.

Maybe ScottyB can measure the resistance of one of his Solenoids in stock to verify if the 312Ω resistance is the value of the "Starting" coil or both in Series (Start + Hold).

Test the resistance again between the small posts to see if it is still the same as before.

Go ahead and put the wires back on the small posts.

Did You already check the diode to make sure it is OK?

If it is good, place it back on the small posts with the striped end towards the positive activation wire.

put it all back together and it seems to be working fine at this moment .

The company that makes this unit for us, see the CU logo on the label, specifies position as random.
