How often to add water to batteries
I apologize if this has been covered. I did search but did not find an answer.
I am a golfer and use my 2015 RXV mainly for golf and since I work, it sits on the charger Monday – Friday with little or no use. I have been taking it off charge every Saturday morning and adding distilled water and going to play. I use it again on Sunday morning but do not add water. Am I over watering? If so, how do I determine when to water? TIA |

Re: How often to add water to batteries
every battery is going different from manufacture to age . new batteries are going to need very little and more as they age . I check my5 yr old trojan 875 every two weeks and add as needed . I try to keep mine from 1/4" to 1/2" above the plates .

Re: How often to add water to batteries
I use the info from the EXGO RXV service manual shown below. My batteries are 2018 Trojans and I don't need to add water more than every few months although my cart only gets used for about 5-6 miles daily.
I keep mine on the charger when ever it isn't being used. |

Thanks for the replies!
To clarify, I am also using a Flow Rite watering system. Can I cause damage or reduce battery life by continuing to water this way? |

Never had a watering system but my understanding is that those are prone to failure and you'd be better off getting rid of it and watering manually. Something about getting clogged.

Personally, I find filling the cells manually to be easy and simple with a bent neck squeeze bottle. |

Re: How often to add water to batteries
In addition to malfunctions that cause under-filling and over-filling, there is also the possibility of chain-fire with hydrogen gas filled tubes connect the cells.

Re: How often to add water to batteries
Hey, he found the pic of the 6 that blew up under my a**! (On a $24k golf cart).
And a pic of 4 US bats that blew that looks like one i posted. As you might imagine, I'm not a fan of single point "auto fill" systems either.... You might ask, "well why arent you opening them to check every time it's in for service?", that's an easy one, the more often you disturb them, the more likely they are to have problems. Also, dont be surprised when your servicing facility calls you up and says "we wont install your old fill system on these new batteries we are installing". The systems get so gummed up & scuzzy, they would be a liability to reinstall. You will be lucky if they're clean enough for use on a second set of batteries (only happens on lightly used carts). And the scuzzy doesnt "just wash off". |
