Charger Upgrade for TXT-PDS-36V Duracell GC2-DGC
Does anyone have a recommendation for a charger?
Looking for advice on upgrading a 'no-name' trickle charger for the 2006 TXT-PDS-36 volt cart we just purchased for our 96 year old WWII vet dad. It came with (6) new Duracell GC2-DGC Batteries (75 AMP Rating = 105 min). The charger is a 5 watt charger and, although it seems to be working OK (LED 2 turns green after overnight charge.... I am wondering if this is the best charger to keep the batteries in good condition. The literature on the batteries state that they are constructed with Absorbed Glass Matt, and care should be used when charging: "Do not exceed 1/3 of the Reserve Capacity Minute Rating". So, I am trying to get info from the manufacture (West Penn Manufacturing) to see what that rating is for my batteries. The Accusense 'Charge Series' models seem to have good ratings. I downloaded their operation manual and found something like 30 programming options, and can't figure out which one would be appropriate for our batteries, and have contacted the company (DPI) looking for an answer. Any comments would be appreciated. |

Summit II is a good choice and will charge the AGM batteries

There appears to be a mix up about battery type going on.
A Duracell GC2-DGC battery is a FLA (Flooded Lead Acid) type rather than an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) type. Also, it is East Penn rather than West Penn. |

JohnnieB:
Thank you for finding that spec sheet. The product literature states that the battery has "Premium glass mat reinforcement...", and I mistakenly thought this was AGM technology. Do you recommend upgrading the charger from a 5 Amp trickle charger? |

Re: Charger Upgrade for TXT-PDS-36V Duracell GC2-DGC
Yes, a better charger is needed.
The 5A charger will eventually charge the battery pack, and if cart isn't driven very far and not used very often, it might be able to keep the batteries charged, but the problem then becomes it doesn't shut off when the pack is fully charged and overcharging may occur. The Summit-II kgsc mentioned is about the best bang for the buck theses days. https://www.cartsunlimited.net/lester-summit-ii.html |

Thank you very much.
By the way, is temperature compensation (optional accessory) important? (The vehicle is in a covered car port all winter in Pennsylvania.) |

Temperature compensation is critic for AGM and Gel-cell batteries, but doesn't matter much for FLA batteries.
