HELP, Rear grinding noise
We’ve had our cart for about 4 years now.
It has always had a “grinding” noise from the rear of the cart when going slowly or taking the foot off the pedal and coasting. It does not make the noise in reverse nor does it it make the noise when your foot is on the pedal driving. For the most part it makes the noise when we are kind of creeping along with the foot off the pedal, going slow, or coasting. As soon as you push the pedal down and the cart picks up speed the noise goes away immediately. Looking for any advice on what it may be or where to start. I’m changing the transaxle fluid next weekend. Thanks guys, happy carting! |

Re: HELP, Rear grinding noise
Put up on jacks and see if you can narrow down where it's coming from. Also, list make model, voltage of your cart.

Re: HELP, Rear grinding noise
Ok, I can do that. I’m pretty handy. One of those weekend mechanics.
It’s a 99 Club Car DS 48v. We converted it to a solid state and upgraded to the 48v through Scotty. I will say, it had this noise before we did the upgrades. Also, the noise hasn’t gotten any worse either. |

Re: HELP, Rear grinding noise
We drove the cart around this weekend. It has always drove fine minus the annoying noise. To get a better idea of the sound, it sounds almost like a metal whining noise. When going up a grade or hill the noise is not present but it is still there when coasting and foot is off the accelerator pedal. I'm leaning towards a bad guide ring or a gear isn't catching fully or a bearing.
Again, if anyone has had any luck dealing with this issue, please reach out. |

Re: HELP, Rear grinding noise
It's probably your brake pads dragging on the drums or possible the bearing in the motor making the sound.

Re: HELP, Rear grinding noise
I changed the differential fluid. Minimal shavings on the magnet. It did quiet the “chatter” down a bit. Now it only “chatters” when coasting or going down a hill. I ordered a guide ring. That will be next when we put a wrap on our cart in a few weeks. Our motor is a D&D 170-002-0002.

Re: HELP, Rear grinding noise
Finally an update. We bit the bullet and bought a new D&D motor for our cart. The spindles on the motor were pretty warn, causing the chattering noise. Problem solved.
