Default have to choke every time

1996 295 even after warmed up have to just barely pull choke and starts right up. runs fine. what does that sound like to yall? when i get thru Christmas gonna put a 375 in from motors and more. has anyone here ever tried one?

It could also be the carb, they'll ware around the throttle shaft and get to where you have to use the choke to start the engine even if it sits for just a short time. I doubt it's the problem but stranger things have happened.
What you need to do is a compression test to figure it out for sure. before you do the test the valves should be adjusted correctly. seeing that you've run out of adjustment on the valves this means your valves are sinking into the head and will need replaced. This seems to be the obvious problem and will cause the hard to start unless choked condition. This is a common problem with the engines of that year, they had used non-harden valves so they'll ware out rather quickly. This only happens to the intake valves. all replacement valves are harden.

I had one come thru and it was the throttle linkage was stuck causing the carb throttle to stay open. replace and adjusted throttle cable and cart started w/o choking.
