honing a engine?
me and my dad spent countless hours arguing this evening about the recent motor we rebuilt. we didnt hone the engine before putting in the new rings and pistons which caused a little bit of white smoke to puff out of the engine everytime we started it. i was told this was because we didnt hone the cylinders. my dad argues that the engine didnt need it and it would only cause more damage to the cylinders. see the motor was rebuilt at one point. it is a 295cc robin engine bored out to a 350 cc piston with stainless sleeves. will honing the sleeves damage the engine?

If the cylinders are slick I could see that happening ....... If you didn't rough up the cylinders with a dingleberry hone or something like one it'll probably take the rings a little longer to break in ....... I'd run it and not even worry about it right now .......

Well we have had to take out the motor to fix a unrelated problem so I figured I had might as well . See I plan on using tha cart for hunting and I don't want to arrive at the stand smelling like oil :) . I know we shouldn't argue about it but we are both so hard headed.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't honing a engine on cross hatch the cylinder. It doesn't increase the piston size correct? . |

Boring is generally used open the holes up for larger pistons, to clean up gauls (deep scratches) to remove the wear-lip at the top of the stroke, or to correct an egg-shaped cylinder ..... and honing just takes the glaze off the inside of the cylinders and creates a crosshatch to make the rings seat sooner.
If you hone the thing till the cows come home ..... sure you can increase the size of the cylinder. Still .... be good to your Pop ...... You only get one of them. |

honing it wont hurt it, but if it smokes on start up,most likly the intake valve seal,mine did the same thing so i just blew compressed air into the cyl. and changed the seal. if yr planning on tearing it down ,might want to ck the valve guides, not saying the rings wont make it smoke cuz there is break in time, but more so in the valvetrain

I'm with goodman, smoking on start up only would be the valve guides/seals, oil from the head leaking down into the cylinder.

Trust me on this one, Hone engine, change stem seals and make sure valve are good. I just put a motor back together without honing are changing stem seals and I am really wishing I did just to eliminate possibilities of those things being the source of the problem. Go back and read my post and see what you think. Bore is to cut, hone is to deglaze ( don’t over do the deglazing tho).
