Default piston installtion

i have a 1982 ezgo golf part that im ready to install a new piston and rings into the new head .the piston has Ex and STD stamped on the top.some one told me that EX has to be inline with the exhaust (muffler loc.)port. i tried this but ex does not line up with exhaust loc. with new head in proper place. can somebody give me the correct info???????????????

There is a nice little video of the rebuild here
You could probably start at part 2 as that is where you are. The crazy thing is that at the end of part 2 he makes the classic mistake of replacing the piston backwards. He corrects this at the start of part 3 but you just know that he replaced the engine and then spent days working out why it didn't run.
The moral of the story is the port in the piston skirt must face the carburetor.
