Stopping secondary clutch chatter
I have an 89' yamaha G2 with a Comet 94C primary and most likely the original secondary clutch. I have already installed the input shaft spacer on the rear end. I have also replaced the seals/bushings on the secondary sheaves. It makes a near constant chattering noise under a load and when off the gas coasting from speed. The inner helix or ramp part of the secondary closest to the axel housing had a little play in it when I was installing the spacer, but I didn't think it was too bad since the inner helix rides up against the flat surface of the spacer. It's just an annoying noise and I was wondering if it was just a "normal" noise that the yamaha secondaries make or should I look into replacing some parts. Or is there an upgrade for the secondary?

Re: Stopping secondary clutch chatter
I would replace the helix. Only about $50. And hope the input shaft bearings aren't bad.

Re: Stopping secondary clutch chatter
Mine started making a noise while on vacation at the beach a few weeks back They did not last long at all. Like one day. I bought a new belt , both sheaves, power spring from plowmans .It came as a kit.

Re: Stopping secondary clutch chatter
Something is wrong I would take it off and make sure the outer is on the taper and the key is good, then look at the inner and the helix. The moving sheave can have a little play but not that much or it will wobble. You can upgrade the helix to the new style with much better plastic pucks in it for the ramps that don't break off like the old ones. Though I never did mine has run for 10yr with no problems lol, but I have a new set of them sitting here.
On top of all that clutch issues are more important than you think because its your transmission. If it is off a little you are losing power to the ground, and most golf carts are not blessed with too much power. |

Re: Stopping secondary clutch chatter
Thanks for the replies. As much as I hate working on the secondary, it looks as if I am going to replace the inner and outter sheaves and the helix upgrade. When I went to get the seals and bushings for the sliding sheave I was told by my local cart dealer's mechanic that he rarely, if ever replaces those parts and usually just replaces the whole sheave. He ended up giving me the seals and bushing because he said he would never use them. I guess I should have taken his advise then. It's so dad gum hot here in Oklahoma I don't even want to think about working on the cart right now...

Re: Stopping secondary clutch chatter
They usually wear through and get holes in them, for the aluminum ones. The steel halves seem to hold up much better.
