Default 1986 Yamaha G1 Gas - electrical DOA after replacing battery

New owner of 1986 G1 gas cart. Ser# J31-1414646 - Had a bad battery, was getting little power to engine (cranked slowly) as well as reverse buzzer when in R. Heard a high pitch clanging which sounds like the clutch?

Well while I was gone purchasing a new battery my inpatient son decided to Jump it and though he won't admit it I think he crossed the wires. He said the "wire got hot and burned his finger". UUUGH.

I installed the new battery and now I get nothing at all. Proper voltage is getting to the starter and relays. I purchased a service manual but thought I would run it by the experts here to see where is the first couple places to look before I begin my journey testing and tracing the wires and components. I will most likely be rewiring the system as there seems to be a few wires going no where (from previous owner). I don't mind buying new components.

Thanks in advance for any guidance. I've worked on cars and small engines but the Carts seem to be a breed of their own.

I’d start with the basics. Lift the rear of the cart so it can spin its little wheels. Check and make sure you have 12v on the blue (FWD) or yellow wire (REV) with key on and pedal pressed. I’ll load up a simplified schematic for the forward circuit for you to ponder..
Good luck and let us know your results.
