Default Used Yamaha 36 Volt Advice

I have a friend that is trying to get rid of an old Yamaha 36 volt electric for cheap. I took a quick look at it and the only obvious thing is that it needs some work to repair the floor under the batteries that has rusted out. I could use the cart at the lake for the grand kids to run around the neighborhood in. The cart wasn't charged up and moved a little, but couldn't tell even if it would take a charge or not. Just wondering about the overall quality of the yamaha 36 volt and if it would be worth the trouble of repairing. I am guessing it's a mid 90's model and I can probably pick it up for under 500 smackers. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, bennie.

Welcome to BGW. Yamaha made a very good electric cart...They all tend to rust and corrode under the batteries...Repair involves cutting out the bad metal and bolting or welding in the new angle irons. You can bet any electric sold for cheap is ready for new batteries and they will cost more than the cart is worth in it's present condition. Also the cables will need to be replaced as well. Enjoy.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was guessing it would need a new set of batteries and cables. Providing that's all that needs replaced besides the metal work under the batteries, I should probably have $1K in it if it doesn't need anything else. Just trying to figure out if I want to hassle with it or not. I've driven a ton of carts on the golf course, but never owned one before. I've always guessed that if I were to ever buy one, it would be gas and not electric. Any opinions on that? Thanks again. Bennie.

A gas cart will cost more initially. But they have their advantages, like not running low on a charge. They are always ready to go - if you got gas $.

If you do get it and rework the battery tray area, when you are ready to paint, use the spray on bed liner from places like advance auto or auto zone.
@ $8.00 a can but a couple of good coats and you are set for ever.

Give a good look under the cart at the frame. rust can be from front to back.

Charger come with it I hope?

Thanks. It does come with a charger. I need to go by and look it over real good before buying it, that's for sure.
