Default Starter question on G2

Does the starter/generator suppose to spin as soon you press the gas petal and keep spinning until the gas engine kicks in?

Or does it only spins for 1 to 2 cycle expecting the gas engine to take over?

My gas engine is not always starting at the first cycle but starter would only spin 1 or 2 cycle then stop at that point I would release the gas petal and step on it again to spin it again until it gas engine kick in and start running.

I am wondering if it should be continuity spinning until gas engine engages then switch to generator mode or something but will keep spinning if the gas engine does not engage?

It is suppose to be spinning any time the pedal is down. Once the gas engine runs it is still on, but the gas engine exceeds its top rpm so it does not power anything anymore. When the VR wants to charge the battery it sends power to the small wires on the gen and that excites the windings, then it generates power. A DC motor will take less power the closer it is to its max rpm (or over). The more load and resulting lower rpm it runs the more power it takes. That is why it takes power to spin the engine over but once the engine runs faster it does not really take power from the battery.

If it does not spin pedal down, check belt for slipping. Next check battery cables and clamps for connection issues. Check all ground wires and cables. Then check gen brushes. Could also be the switch on the pedal, less likely but could be the starter solenoid as well.

Thank you for explaining! I understand what your saying and so there is an issue with my starter/generator.

I found out the issue when I was trying to dump all the fuel out of the gas tank into a container by stepping on the petal and let the starter spin to create the suction needed for gas pump but with the spark plug wire unplugged.

When I pressed the petal, it spins about 1 to 2 cycles then stop but I do feel a clicking sound somewhere is that normal?

Then I release petal and press it down again, it would spin again for another 1-2 cycles then stop. I repeated this steps a couple of time and it does the same thing each time.

I stopped pumping the petal when I saw smoke coming out of the rear of the starter and I was like uh oh ...... then I plugged fuel line back into carb and the spark plug wire back on and press petal the gas engine started up so starter is still working but only 1 -2 cycles at a time per petal press.

I wonder the smoke may be pointing to bad brushes?

The belt is worn and I do have a new belt which I haven't put in yet but it not slipping or anything. Starter just completely stops after a cycle or two.

It's possible a bad solenoid

The smoke is normal for repeated attempts at starting so close together my club car ds does this with the vc460 engine due to the higher compression and I have a new starter/generator

The smoke comes from one of the wires that goes to the starter/generator on mine not the starter/generator itself

Bad brushes can cause hard start though(been there before)

Would it be okay to test for bad solenoid by jumping two big lugs with a screwdriver to see if it start spinning continually?

I have tested for bad solenoids on a automobile this way but I wondered if it works the same on golf cart or I will ruin something if I attempt this on golf cart solenoids?

You either have a weak battery, poor/dirty electrical connections, or bad brushes in starter.

Go to the sticky "So your Yami won't turn over" (up top) and go through the tests outlined in the sticky. It will bring you to your problem!!

If I were you, I'd remove the starter/generator, take it all apart, clean it up, and put new brushes in. Then clean/repair all electrical connections as you put it back in. Then load test the battery to see if it's any good!!

All electrical connections need to be clean and in good shape!! All these things should be done before you'll have any relieability!
