Exclamation 98 G22 has rear end noise???

I have what I believe is a 98 G22 gas cart. Here in the last ride or two I have noticed a rear end noise. Tonight we went for a ride and every time I would let off the accelerator it sounded terrible. Like...........grinding noise. Any ideas what to look at? The local golf cart shop is really expensive here in town and I have a pretty solid mechanical mind if I know what the parts are called and located. Thanks in advance

If it's a '98, then it's a G16. Remove the drive belt and see if there is play in the input shaft--up and down, side to side. I'm guessing worn input shaft bearing.

Ok,it only does this in forward motion..... if it was the input shaft bearing would it make noise in reverse as well?

Check the clutches over good. Although it could be any number of things I'd guess a clutch issue on a cart that old. look for wear/holes in the area the belt rides in on both clutches. Also look at the belt real good as well for any chunks missing or any fraying.

While your checking things I'd pull the plug on the rear differential and check the fluid in it as well.

These are just a few things to check, there are lots of things can cause noise that sounds like it is in the rear end.
