Default 1999 Yamaha G16E attempts to move forward then quits

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1999 Yamaha G16E (36 volt system) that attempts to move forward but power cuts before it can move at all. I am fairly confident that all the batteries are good, as I just tested a few weeks back and had to replace a bad one that was reading around 4 volts.

All connections between batteries and all seem to be in tack and not corroded. So now I am at a loss. Any advice on where to go next and what to check?

On a side note, how do you know if a charger is bad. Seems like the charger runs and never moves off of the 0-1 Amps reading on the charger. It will shut off after a while but takes a bit. This issue has been an ongoing issue where it won't work, then will work fine for a few weeks, then do the same again.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Matt

Charger should go way above 1 amp when it first turns on, then taper back to near zero before shutting down. These charger symptoms could be caused by a charger problem, or another bad battery that allows the charging voltage to instantly jump to the cutoff voltage. What voltage does the pack reach while on charge?

What is your pack voltage when it tries to move and quits?

Yeah it seems that the charger always hovers around 1, never moves. I guess I do not know how to determine the pack voltage....kind of a newbie at electric golf carts haha. How would you go about this and what would it tell me?

Get a digital voltmeter and learn how to use it! It is not difficult and you will eventually need to troubleshoot battery problems. It sounds like it could be a battery problem and the way to tell is to measure the battery pack voltage while trying to drive the cart.

Lol I understand how to use a voltmeter Volt_Ampere but doesn't do me any good if I don't know what to measure! Is the pack voltage the voltage across all the batteries??

The battery terminals farthest to the front outer left & right corners on a G16.

Yes - pack voltage is the voltage across the battery "pack". You need to monitor it when stopped and when trying to move. If it drops a lot when trying to move, you either have a bad battery or a bad cable connection. This is by far the most common problem we deal with on this forum.
