Default Rear wheel gettin really hot

I have a 199? Yamaha G2 that I had recently picked up. Previous guy says he had installed new brakes, tires, and a few other items. It seems like after riding for a few minutes, the rear wheel gets really hot and the buggy is dragging.Doesn't want to move very fast. I looked at the brakes, and it seems there is a gear at the bottom of the brake that keeps engaging every time the brakes are applied and causes the pads to expand/adjust. When I looked online, they only show a self adjusting brake with a screw on top. I don't have this setup. Any idears??...

Your setup sounds correct for your cart. That top adjust thing is mostly a club car thing. You may have the wrong brake pads installed, ot the correct ones installed backward. In my opinion, the best way to adjust them is to disconnect the cables at the brakes and Ratchet the lever at the back of the brake until it will not ratchet any longer. Vice grips for grabbing the lever works good. You may find that the cables now won't reach, loosen the cables at the pedal to allow for connection. Your pedal "play" should be around 1.75 inch's. Adjust at the back first, and make your way to the front.
