Default clubcar carryall over charging

Hi, I have a 2006 clubcar carryall. Now have an overcharge issue. What started this was the battery was not charging. Went through the test as outlined in service manual. It indicated voltage regulator. Installed new VR and am now getting 17 volts +.. Called Buggies Unlimited and they sent me another VR. Was getting 17+ volts. Again went through tests and came up VR. I called BU and they sent me a replacement. Battery now charged and with second VR and still get the 17+ volt results. I have had all the connections off to the VR and cleaned them. Is there something internally in the starter/generator that could be grounding causing the over charge. Not sure where to start since testing still says replace VR. Thanks.

I am struggling with the same issue. I replaced a voltage regulator and then got another replacement thinking the one out of the box was bad. I just ordered a new S/G. It is in the mail and should have it Tuesday. I will let you know how it turns out. There has got to be an internal short causing it to ground.

It's possible the yellow wire is grounded out between the VR and S/G. You could disconnect it from both ends and try to temporarily run a wire from the yellow terminal.to the post on th starter/generator. See if that changes anything.

I Also tried this in my diagnosis. The wire was not shorted to the frame. But very well could be the case for the original poster to try and Isolate and eliminate I also noticed while poking around that the post on my starter/generator that the yellow wire connects to will ground out to the frame when probing for continuity. I will let you know when i get the new one installed. I also believe I hear a chirp coming from the S/G which makes believe it has some issues inside it.

I think in your case, sounds like it's shorted to the case. New starter/generator should fix it. Did you get an OEM starter/generator? If not, I would try and return it before you install it and get an OEM one. The aftermarket units don't have a very good reputation for functionality or longevity...

That’s what I read aswell. I ordered the premium one off of buggies unlimited. Did some searching and couldn’t find an OEM. Any suggestions where to find an OEM one?

Thank you for your response and input.

OP, check that post and see if it has continuity to the frame like mine. Assuming you have a multi meter or the like.

Thank you.

May I also strongly suggest not to use aftermarket voltage regulators. They're junk. General rule of thumb in the golf car industry, aftermarket ignition and charging system components are all garbage.

See my other post about the radio cutting out. You will see that I replace two voltage regulators, and a starter generator. Neither of which were the problem. Make sure that the voltage regulator has a good ground ! From the factory it has a path to the frame, once I ran it directly to the battery it took care of the situation and worked perfectly.Happy hunting, it is a simple circuit and was driving me nuts, and took $300 to figure out that it could’ve only cost me $.30
