kf82 rebuild problem (s)
So, I put a new piston and rod in the KF82 , tried to start it , no go. Did a compression test 35-40 psi - OUCH! I am pretty sure I got the timing right - I'm guessing possibly the head is warped ? I'm about ready to try and sell the engine and put a new engine of some kind in it. Any advice ?

Did you measure ring end gap? How did the cylinder look? Did you put in a new head gasket and torque it properly? What about valves? How do they look?

Re: kf82 rebuild problem (s)
You put oil on the rings right? I like to use something heavy like 20w-50 on the rings, something that will stay on them and keep them lubed during break-in. Brand new rings don’t make high compression right away until they break in.
Could have something else going on like worn valves but I would squeeze some oil in there on top of the piston and make sure the compression comes up before taking it apart again. |

Re: kf82 rebuild problem (s)
ahha, I will squeeze some oil on top of piston and check compression again a few times. Thanks for that tip !

Re: kf82 rebuild problem (s)
You can't just go putting new rings in a cylinder and expect it to work. Not saying this is your problem, but you really gotta measure the end gap.and make sure it's in spec. If the cylinder is worn, new rings may still have too much gap to have proper compression.
Ring end gap is critical. Too much gap and compression will be low. Needs to be overbored and use oversize rings. Too little gap and it can ruin the cylinder very quickly. How do the valves look? Did you inspect the valves and the seats? I know you cant really easily set valve lash in this motor, and lash spec is way up there (like .030 if I remember). Pour a tablespoon of oil on the piston and check compression again. And make sure you hold the throttle wide open when you test it. |

Re: kf82 rebuild problem (s)
Thanks CP , I did not check clearance on rings and did not rebore cylinder .Valves looked good along with cylinder wall - probably made a mistake assuming everything was good . I will put a Tablespoon of oil on piston and see if I can get the compression up. Appreciate it !

I may have a few extra cylinder heads laying around my shop if you confirm that's your issue. Here's hoping you just got the timing marks wrong.
