2-stroke offroad capability.
I've been searching around but am still unsure. So I thought I'd just ask for some opinions. I've been looking for a cheap fixer upper cart to lift and take a passenger on the mild trails. There is one I see from the road, haven't been closer than 500ft to it, that I could probably get for a really good price. Talking with a friend of the owner, it's a 2-stroke where the motor turns backwards for reverse and doesn't run unless you're hitting the gas pedal. Until I talked to this guy, I;d never heard of this design. It would also need some motor work, which is the reason it's sitting and also why I could get it cheap(maybe free). I've been reading up on this design here and on youtube but can't grasp how it would run offroad. So that is really my question, does this design work for an offroad lifted cart with maybe a 20-22" tire?

Re: 2-stroke offroad capability.
Oops, haha. I guess the engine shutting off is weird to me because I'm used to lawnmowers and gocarts. I just assumed the motor idled when you let off the gas. So then if all carts are like that, it pretty much answers my question since there are a ton of guys on here running them. Thanks for the quick responces guys. Now to see about getting that cart.

Re: 2-stroke offroad capability.
I aint knockin the two smokers but if your wantin a two passenger cart to do trail ridin, any substantial hill will probably be a challenge. Just sayin'..... You might consider a four stroke. More upgrades and more options for engine and power upgrades... My 2 lincolns!!

I have and 1987 ezgo 2 stoker that's been in the family for about 12 years. Has 4 inch lift and 22" tires and back flip down seat. We have halted wood and deer out of the woods. Pulls trailers and goes through the snow good. The kids love it for trail rides looking for deer an ice fishing.

Re: 2-stroke offroad capability.
Personally, I prefer my 2-stroke to my buddies 350, flat-out I'm quite a bit faster, and the difference on hills really isn't that significant (I live at a closed ski resort, so we have plenty of hills, big and small) ... The older Marathons are really easy to work on, parts are relatively inexpensive, and they look and handle really nicely with 22's (and if you decide you need a little extra power and torque, a shorter belt will do the trick for under $30).
I say go for it (especially if the price is right) - while these things aren't on a par with say a RZR, they can actually cover a lot more ground than you would think !!! |
