Cool backfiring thru exhaust

Bought this cart use and we have head reworked at a machine shop that work on all types of engines. Values, springs, seal replace head surfaced value seat ground. Replace timing belt, plugs and air filter. Timing belt and values were set to spec.
The popping does not happen all the time just sometimes when you let off the gas to slow down.
Is this normal?

Thanks
1999 EZ-Go 295 cc engine

Welcome to BGW
Your cart is a 4 stroke. Your valves need to be readjusted. Your motor is sucking fresh air through the muffler because the exhaust valve adjustment is tight and not letting the valve close. Proper adjustment is simple (.004) cold.

Continued use as is will DAMAGE the valve or seat.

I'll try to adjust them this week before we drive it again. We'll just have to drive the Yamaha electric one
