Shortening my steering column
Has anyone tried to shorten their steering column? With the after market steering wheels and adaptors my steering wheel is way to high and in my face. I removed the column and the shaft and have taken 7" off of each. As oon as I get it welded and put back on I wll post pics.

Re: Shortening my steering column
The best and safest way is to cut it in the center.Mark the spot, with 2 alignment-marks to keep everything in-line,remove the amount you want it shortened, then use a shaft-sleeve(they sell them thru Racing-Suppliers,Street-Rod suppliers,etc..)or a piece of heavy-wall DOM-Bushing Material that has the correct I.D. for the shaft to fit inside tightly.Align your marks, then have it welded.Hope this helps.

Re: Shortening my steering column
So here is what I have so far. I took seven inches out of the middle of the steering shaft. I then cut seven inches out of he steering coluum. The shaft is solid steel and the coluum is just a oiec of tubing. I cut the columm up high to help minimize alignment due to the fact there is a bearing in the end of it. I hope to get it welded tonight, I figure tig will be the cleanest and easiest way. I will post more pics when I get it together again.

Re: Shortening my steering column
Just make sure you sleeve the shaft somehow, you don't want to rely on a Butt-Weld,reguardless of who does it,or how.Never Butt-Weld steering-parts without sleeving.A small piece of tubing slid over after it is butt-welded is cheap security.Hope this helps.

Re: Shortening my steering column
Good thread! I hate the height of the steering on carts, I think it ruins the looks of the whole cart. I thought about tilt columns but that's way too expensive. Don't forget pics!
