That commutator looks only "ok", not "good". Of course it would be better if you sent it in for lathe "cleanup". Since you are putting new "flat" brushes on the uneaven surface of the rough commutator, be Really easy on it for a while. It might work out fine for 'ya, might not. Sandpaper wont really do you any huge favors either, if thats your next question....

No, no sandpaper. Yeah, I know it's rough. I'm just not sure if its better to try to turn it down, or let the new brushes mate to it as is.
I have some lathe options I could try. Does anyone have experience/recommendations for turning an armature? Copper can be a little tricky.

Worst case is I pay to have a motor shop do it, but my budget is pretty tight right now.

Now matter what, I assume I'll have to take it easy on the motor for a while

BTW: this was the major failure. The brush slides in the guide fine so I'm not replacing it. (Hopefully I don't regret the decision)

Ok, carefully ran it through my old atlas bench top lathe. Man those end grooves are deep! I don't want to take the whole thing down to that level, so I stopped where I did. Carefully cleaned out copper chips from the undercut. The undercut is very deep so I don't think I need to bother with it. Fingers crossed!

That commutator does not look very good to me. Have it turned by a motor shop. It will last much longer with new brushes that way.

Ouch... Don't care for my work eh?

I'm am considering taking it to a shop, but still on the fence

Thats what i was thinking, it looks much better now. I have a armature lathe, and i enjoy doing those (as long as my cut tool is sharp).

All back together and in the cart! Running good! Plan is to take it very easy until the new brushes wear in.

Thanks for all the advice!
