Total Charge 20484 Operation
Getting close to getting this old 36 Volt Resistor drive 1986 running. Got the new batteries in and all the cables replaced.
I got the factory Total Charge 20484 green front charger with it. Plugged it in and turned it to START like the manual said. Initially started out at 20A and after four hours am down to about 7 amps. According to the manual this standard Total Charge green front has a circuit in it that turns off the charger and the timer on the front displays how long it charged before it was done. The timer appears to be operating as it says. The four hours that has elapsed is exactly what it is reading. Next I am hoping the automatic sensing circuit is working for the shutoff. How long should I let it run and how can I determine if the batteries are charged fully in case the circuit is not working. In other words when should I panic and manually shut it off!! |

Re: Total Charge 20484 Operation
The mechanical timer is supposed to shut off the charger you have if the battery pack's on-charge voltage does not climb into the 44V to 46V range in 12 hours.
Of this is the initial charge of new batteries, the charge time may exceed 12 hours (up to about 20 hours may be need for the first charge of new batteries) If the timer times out, restart the charger and let it go another 12 hours. If the charger doesn't shut off automatically on the second go around, it is time to investigate further, but both the charger and the batteries seem to be behaving normally. ---------- FWIW: You can run that type charge continuously for up to about two days, or so, without hurting the batteries. Due to its design, as the pack voltage increases, the amps the charger puts out decreases, so that type charge is fairly benign. Last edited by JohnnieB; 11-07-2015 at 05:22 PM.. Reason: added info |

Re: Total Charge 20484 Operation
Thanks.
I am up to 44.5 volts after 5.5 hours right now. Will let it rock for now and follow your advice. |
