AC quieter?
Ten years ago when I first bought my old Marithon, I was on another golf cart forum. (Closed now) I remember a guy saying he went somewhere in North Carolina and drove a custom AC golf cart. He said it went over 45 mph and that it was way quieter then a DC cart. They were very expensive and I really wasn't interested.
I forgot all about it till recently. I don't know if they had RXV carts then. I know they don't go that fast, but are they quieter? Hard to believe a cart could get much quieter. Never heard one though. |

Re: AC quieter?
I have an RXV (which I believe they started making in 200, I can't speak for everyone else but MINE is much louder than all of my friends TXT series carts. Not necessarily in a bad way... It makes a.....howling noise.... All of my friends joke saying it sounds like some kind of turbo on it. It is not silent though.

Re: AC quieter?
The noise is from the gears/axle, not motor. The ac motor itself is comparable to a dc motor in my opinion.

Re: AC quieter?
I have a Yamaha AC G29/Drive. I've heard that sound that I assume is the gears/axle. However, I also have a high-pitched dog-whistle whine somewhat like that sound from a flyback transformer on an old CRT TV. It might be one of those things some people can't hear as I've always been like that. Anyway, I've assumed this is some kind of sound from the controller? Is it normal?
I've never driven a DC cart for comparison. |

Noise is from frequency generator circuits and MOSFET driver circuit in controller. Yes this is normal- most people do not hear this noise ------especially us older farts. Older RXV's or ones with many miles on them tend to have a "Whine" noise in the rear end. As CG said this is gear noise. You can eliminate this noise by replacing the transaxle (rear end). The noise can be annoying-but seems to have no effect on cart. |

Re: AC quieter?
Both AC and DC controllers chop the current at a high frequency. Most folks can't hear it but it can vibrate things and create stuff you can hear.
