Re: Ezgo PDS 48v conversion
Just curious did you go with 8-6v batteries or 6-8v? If you went with 6v where did you put the extra 2 batteries? I'm planning on upgrading mine from 36v to 48v soon

Re: Ezgo PDS 48v conversion
I did 8 - 6volts. I like tons of lead. I followed Scottyb's example.

Re: Ezgo PDS 48v conversion
Under the seat. I had to severely modify my FNR to make room. Couldn't have pulled it off without JonnyB's help.

Re: Ezgo PDS 48v conversion
It has been several years since I squeezed 8/6v under the seat of a TXT. Typical of R&D projects I spent a lot of time and resources on a project that ultimately proved be more unique than practical. The modifications required to compact the rotary F&R proved too extensive to bring to market.
So while the cart had great run time the directional shifting problem remained until I started working with reversing contactors. A reversing contactor allows the switch device to be located anywhere in the cart. Locating the controller and the contactor(s) behind the pack, above the differential, is what is needed for 8/6v under the seat in a TXT. However, since then, I have favored 6/8v. Significant savings in weight and improved speed controller efficiency has contributed to improved results.Today the biggest improvements in run time are found in lithium battery packs. And soon we will be seeing new solid state batteries which will double or triple that efficiency without the drawbacks associated with Lithium based batteries. |

Not soon enough!
Patents were filed by a Texas University. This may take a couple more years to reach us but, the electric car industry is driving this research hard. One of the key researchers is John Goodenough, developer of the lithium ion battery. When he gets excited, everybody listens. |

Re: Ezgo PDS 48v conversion
FWIW:
Fitting eight 6V batteries under the seat of a series drive Medalist or TXT is difficult due to the need of modifying the F/R switch or going to a reversing contactor that can be relocated along with the controller. On the other hand, with PDFS and DCS drives, the F/R switching is done inside the controller, so only the controller has to be relocated. ---------- Lithium batteries are on my bucket list, but I'll probably kick the bucket before they are in my budget. |

Re: Ezgo PDS 48v conversion
My series might get 5 more years, so new things might be in store.
