Quick torque boost - '95 Medalist 36V?
Hello all, I'm new to this forum, I just picked up an old crusty '95 Medalist that I'm bringing back to life. The cart has a lift on it and big knobbly 22" tires. It absolutely flies down hills but CRAWLS up them. The batteries are new(ish) and seem fine. Everything else on the cart appears original and well-used.
I have a few projects to knock out maintenance-wise but I really want to address the slow-as-Christmas speed up the hills. My neighborhood is very hilly so this is a problem. Maximum distance between charges will be 3-4 miles so run-time is not an issue. What is the best bang-for-the-buck modification I can make to address this? My initial reaction is to swap out the rear-end gear for a shorter gearset since the cart already goes WAY too fast down the hills. However, I don't see much talk about that on here, more about swapping controllers, upgrading batteries etc. Is that the best way to go or am I looking at the wrong upgrade? Thanks all for your help!!! |

Re: Quick torque boost - '95 Medalist 36V?
Thanks Bob, I'm not opposed to that. I got this cart for pennies and it came with a lift kit and brand new 22" wheels and tires. It seems a shame to get rid of what lots of folks spend $ to accomplish. I think it might look a bit goofy with the tiny wheels and tires and lift kit? If I wanted to stick with the setup as-is, what would you recommend to boost the torque?

Re: Quick torque boost - '95 Medalist 36V?
volts and amps is the easy answer...there is no single item upgrade for a series motor that will do the trick-the whole high current system will need upgrading-starting with 48volts.
all series carts go fast downhill-mine went 39mph downhill-this fast can explode your motor...since you have new batts-you might want to upgrade the (2g)cables,solenoid,f/r switch...next is a controller(unless your drive system is a toaster model) then a motor...or you can sell you new 36v pack and go to 48v AND all the above!! |

Re: Quick torque boost - '95 Medalist 36V?
Exactly, which is why I recommended the tire swap back to swap. Lift kits can be undone. Certainly a lot less expensive alternative. Golf carts were simply not designed to be jacked up and have larger tires put on. It can be done, but it needs to be done as part of a complete upgrade build with a lot of other parts. Otherwise there will be issues and eventual failures of stock components. There is no inexpensive "quick" fix.
