When I asked for the F1 and F2 to be switched the problem reversed direction, to me that indicates only one half of the control is working properly.

He made two statements about that and both could be taken two ways, or at least that is the way I could read them.

If the problem reversed direction, the low amp (Field) part of the controller is messing up.

The direction the motor spins is determined by the relative direction of amp flow in the armature and field windings. In the PDS drive, the controller changes the direction the amps flow through the field windings since the amp flow in the field is only about 1/10 the amp flow in the armature and it is easier to make a lower power bipolar (or bidirectional) controller. The PDS controller contains two separate controllers in on box, high power for the armature and low power for the field. The low power output to the field windings appears to be malfunctioning, indicating the whole box is bad.

However, FSIP did give the controller a clean bill of health and the symptoms of running in forward for about 50' and then slowing down, don't seem to be consistent with failing bipolar MOSFETs in the field portion of the controller. or at least not in my mind with my limited understanding of the innards of a PDS controller. The symptoms aren't consistent with the way failing motors act either, or at least I've never heard of one acting that way.

I'm grasping at straws here, but the only thing I can think of that will cause the reported symptoms is a loose magnet disk on the motor shaft. With the motor turning in one direction, the screw loosens and the dick slips and turning in the other direction the screw tightens and the disk spins with motor shaft.

I'd at least put the controller into diagnostic mode and listen for a 1-3 beep code before replacing controller.
