Over-Charging after voltmeter added

I finally added a voltmeter to my 2012 48-volt cart. Simple installation, always on (no switch) appears to work fine. Ran without charging for a few days to see what 'out-of-power' looked like.
Plugged into charger. Went to check on the cart hours later and the charger was still running wide open. I could feel the heat coming off the charger. Meter was pegged almost past 'charging' and into red on the high side.
Did the installation of the meter cause the OBC to not shut the charger off?
The voltmeter leads were both connected directly to the batteries. There is no light in the voltmeter itself.

is this a round needle type meter ?, if so they are pretty useless and need to be replaced with digital one . The meter had nothing to do with the obc.

The only way it could have affected the charging is if You placed the red wire from the charger receptacle to the wrong battery post when you reconnected the cables.

The charging can take up to 16 hours before the OBC turns the charger off. You say you went back "hours" later but was it as much as 16 hours? If you ran the batteries down quite a way to test the voltmeter, then it could take the full time to recharge.

A digital meter sounds much better than trying to explain the round meter that I don't even really get. Thanks for the tip.

If you get a digital meter, get a good one. The cheap ones are pretty hit-and-miss with their quality and accuracy. This one is from one of our sponsors and is good https://www.cartsunlimited.net/battery-meters.html

I have one from ScottyB that has been on 24/7 for 2 years now......I don’t have a roof either.... honestly can’t believe it stays working like that
