scottyb, as originally stated your perl of wisdom is well noted and burnished in my brain. Looking at the diagram as well as the picture of the tags, it appears that S1 and S2 *are* switched. Do you know if this would cause a loss of reverse ?

Hmm, okay well then I guess unless top and bottom are switched ... maybe its the microswitch for 1/2 speed reverse as was previously suggested. Though we did not intentionally remove any of those leads it is of course possible that the connections were jostled or terminals on that switch got loosened etc. I don't suppose there is a way to bypass that switch just to test it that you know of ? I realize this would cause a dangerous full speed condition in reverse but I was thinking just for testing (of course tagging wires *before* disconnecting ) ?
