Default The shocking truth, Monroe 31069, KYB 343137

I'm in the process of my third lift and rebuild. Not going into the discussion over if you should use shocks versus the dampers that are OEM. I prefer the shocks as I think they give a better ride.

Most advice here says to use the Monroe 31069 shocks as a replacement; however I have found that we're not making the correct comparison.

The EZGO dampers are measured tip to tip, i.e the ends of the threaded studs and are shown as being 13" min and 17" max. Shocks are measured from the base of the threaded studs. So using the same measurement spot the dampers are actually 9 1/4" min and 13 1/4" max.

The Monroe 31069 are 10 1/2" min and 17" max. They work, but I have found that they were too long for the front on my most recent rebuild and had to use the original dampers.

Researching, I have found that KYB 343137 are a close match for these dimensions. The KYB catalog shows dimensions of 8.74" min and 14.25" max. I have not been able to find a Monroe with the same dimensions and threaded studs on both ends.

I have ordered the KYB 343137's and will report on how they work.

The KYB 343137 shocks are installed on the front of the rebuild and fit fine. They are very similar in size to the original "dampers".

Will these shocks alter the final ride height?

Do you know what KYB shocks would work for the rear?

Also, can you report on ride, vs. stock?

Ride seems fine. I can tell no difference between the old "dampers" and the new shocks. We use them over fairly level ground, but not golf course smooth.

Thanks. I'll stick with mine. I doubt if I'll go over 20" tires, but may lift it one day, just for looks.

Thanks for this information. I was hoping to replace those dampers on my lifted cart.

I figured I'd add to this as well for others, I also went the KYB route last year. I wanted to post some findings to the group as well but time slipped by. KG5514(13.86extended, 8.74compressed, 5.12 travel) is almost the same as KYB343137(14.25ex, 8.74compressed, 5.51 travel). Both these shocks are used on "Pinto's", they were the best shocks I could find that fit the dimensions and were used on the lightest vehicle I could find. The KG5514 is a "gas adjust", its a little more expensive but comes with all the bushings and hardware ($32 a shock). I've been using them for a year in an off road cart and they have been great. As dvmartin said, the fit is perfect. Thanks dv for your post, it will help many.

Since shock questions seem to pop up frequently, should this be a sticky post?
