Default 08’ 48v txt smoking, motor hot

I recently purchased a used 08 txt shuttle 6 . I’m new to golf cart world and not handy at all around the garage. The 3 year old Trojan batteries and charger have been finicky but I’m hoping it may be something with my electrical outlets in garage. It was just on charger for 24hrs and indicated charge complete.

Anyways, today my wife & 4 year old returned home from a ride (less than 5 min) and the cart was smoking. She came home because the cart was smelling of burnt plastic. When I opened up the seat (where the batteries are) there was smoke . I couldn’t isolate the smoke to any particular battery, but it seemed like it was coming from back portion. (Near motor). All the batteries have visible water at/above grids, and I did not see any damage at any cable connections. Also the battery indicator on the dash appears to be %40 depleted. (After this short ride and “complete” charge)
This event occurred about 2-3 hrs ago and I touched the motor and it is still hot.

I am so grateful the wife and my daughter were not injured or stranded, and the cart didn’t catch on fire.

I am going to have it towed to a golf cart specialist, but hoping to get some input/comfort from users on possible causes/concerns.

Thank you in advance for any input. I’ve attached some pics of motor & battery bay.

Look very carefully for melted wires… Otherwise you may have a motor problem.

I don’t see any melted wires. I backed the cart out of the garage this morning and there was white residue/powder on the floor. I looked under the cart and there is was white substance on a back corner that appears to be one of the batteries??

I did my best to take a pic from under cart

That is corrosion from battery acid but it shouldn’t appear right away like that. Do you see any cracks in the batteries near that mess? Otherwise, that comes from charging the batteries when they are overfilled.

I haven’t pulled the battery completely out but from what I can tell , I don’t see any cracks. The corrosion powder is definitely isolated around 1 battery. I’ve owned this cart for less than 2 weeks. We have taken it around the block 2 or 3 times before and no issues. ( other than battery seemed to deplete rapidly. Only partly depletes rapidly, then seems to stay around 60% charged)

Also the battery with the corrosion appears to be the only one out of the 8 from 2017. The rest are all 2016. Could that be an issue?

Is this battery/corrosion possible source of smoke/ smell??

I disconnected and cleaned all the cables and ran the cart a couple of times no issues. All of my batteries are reading 6.8ish volts. The plastic motor cover broke at the seam so that kind of sucked. Only thing I can think of is we did leave it hooked up to the delta qui-q charger for a few days when we were out of town and this incident occurred the day we got back. Maybe some liquid from battery had boiled over somewhere??

I think I need to get a different charger or battery maintainer for my cart. That delta qui-q seems to get super hot and I am having issues getting it to cycle to completion. I also don’t understand how I am reading >48v on my batteries , but my battery indicator is only showing like 60% full. I did buy a DVM, I just haven’t installed yet.

Fingers crossed [emoji1694]all is good.

Full charge is 50.9 volts. 48 is almost dead.

FWIW, most switching power supply battery chargers get hot. They generally also have temperature sensors, to avoid self-destruction. That's not to say yours is great. Just sayin' hot doesn't mean bad.

6.8 volts per battery is not a useful number. You need to read each battery 12 or more hours after charge completes. 6.37 is typical for a mature battery charged to 100% SOC. You need a reading to two decimal places, and a pack voltage of at least one decimal place.

The attached is for Trojan batteries. Your may be different. You'll notice 50% - which is dead - is higher than 48 volts.

No attachment Yurtle ... find attached a State of Charge chart for your reference.

I guess you attached one when I was posting ... now there are two

I like the Carts Unlimited chart which has addition descriptive information on it.

Me too. I attached one that was so bad, I deleted it from my laptop.
Thanks.
