I have a 1983 ezgo marathon and am trying to adjust the brakes which direction do you turn the adjusting bolt to move the shoes closer to the hub

You mean the counterclockwise threaded screw in the star shaped nut inside the drum?

No the 1983 has a bolt on the back side of the wheel to adjust the brakes

Not sure about a 1983 but newer carts have a very specific step by step adjustment procedure for adjusting cables, pedal clearance ,shoes, ect. If adjusting brakes shoes only could be compensating for bad self adjusters or cable adjustment.
Again not sure on older carts, just wanted to throw throw that out there in case😊

I ran an 84 for years and adjusted if often, but now I can't remember which way it turned without having one to look at. I think it was just a standard right hand thread and one click was usually enough.

What I do remember was that it was no problem to back it off if I went too far, so turn it and see what happens. If you get it too tight, just back it off. If you turn it the wrong way and loosen it, you will realize it as soon as you try to stop it.

The newer carts are self adjusting, but I liked the old style better where I could adjust it myself and get them exactly where I wanted them. Experiment with it and you will quickly figure it out.

Good luck with it.
