Default 36V-12V Reducer install

I tried to install a 36-12 reducer... Looked pretty straight forward... when I connected the + lead to the battery pack, my in-dash digital voltmeter died... any insights?... suggestions? I want to try it again but I don’t want to destroy the new voltmeter.
I searched the site all I could but couldn’t find a clue

Can you link us to the reducer and meter you are asking about? Otherwise ... we are guessing like you.

The meter is the first one on this page

https://www.cartsunlimited.net/battery-meters.html

And this was the reducer... says 48V but the specs were exactly the same as the 36V... I have since gotten the one that specifies 36V but the specs are still the same.... don’t seem to me that either should have popped the voltmeter... that’s been a real dependable meter... affordable and pretty accurate
